Computer Software

Operating Systems

In my spare time I have experimented with many different computer operating systems including nearly every variation of Microsoft Windows, Mac OS Classic, Mac OS X, UNIX, Linux and OpenVMS VAX Version. I primarily use Microsoft Windows but have a good understanding of the basics of all of the operating systems previously mentioned. I have configured different operating systems for different tasks. For example I configured a Linux machine to run an apache web server on my local LAN at home so I could use it for testing and experimentation for websites I was working on. I have also configured my PC with Windows Server 2012 R2 to act as centralised backup for my Laptop and other Windows based machines I have. My experience with UNIX comes from a pair of old HP 9000 workstations I was given running HP-UX 11.11i. I self-taught myself how to configure network access on those boxes based on information I researched from the internet. I have a basic knowledge of how OpenVMS works based on use of a MicroVAX 3100-90 I have. Unfortunately the power supply blew on my unit, but I was able to take an image of the hard disks inside and run the OS in a multiplatform VAX hardware emulator. In my spare time I continue to research and try new things with these operating systems to broaden my knowledge of different types of system and how they work.

Other Software

As well as operating systems, I also have a good knowledge of some other software products. These include products such as the Microsoft Office Suite and Microsoft's Visual Studio Development Environment. Another product that I am familiar with is the Eclipse IDE which I have used to do my Java programming.
